Actually, the Merrimac was burned to the waterline and sunk. The Confederates raised it and used it to create the CSS Virginia. These two ships from the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862. The USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (built from the captured hull of the USS Merrimac) fought each other on the second day of the battle, and it was the first conflict in the world between ships protected by iron. Neither ship won, but the battle caused the navies of the world to realize that armored warships ships were the future.
