The drums were use as a means of communication. The musicians performed the camp duties - calls within the camp such as reveille, guard mounting, sick call, breakfast call, etc. They played on the march to keep the beat and as a morale boost. During combat, musicians were detailed to the hospital to help with the wounded and to bury the dead. They could not be forced to do the work of a regular soldier, such as fight with weapons during combat. They received equal, and sometimes greater, pay than a regular soldier.
Drummer boys had a tough life....they would mostly perform chores, obery orders, and get along with their mates. This was especially hard since most were younger than 12, and lied about their age. Although other drummer boys were between the ages of 12 and 16. Drummer boys led their army with the beat of their drums and also were used to communicate when voices werent load enough.
Drummers in the American Revolution were key members of each company. While many initially entered military service as young as 14-years of age, they were more frequently seasoned soldiers, despite the popular misconception of their relative youth.
Drummers communicated most of the activities both in camp and on the battlefield. Within camp, drummers were used to communicate wake-up calls, mess (food) calls, assembly calls, and virtually any other type of call that involved large portions of the camp. On the battlefield, the drummers coordinated each aspect of the attack, defense, or retreat. Movements and repositioning of troops were also handled by the drummers.
Seasoned soldiers were typically used since they played such a critical role during a battle. Despite their experience, under 18th century rules of warfare the drummers were considered non-combatants and were not openly targeted. Of course, musket-fire was notoriously inaccurate, so casualties among the drum corps were incurred despite their elevated status.

Hi, I am doing a report on civil war drummer boys. I have reserched a lot and have found that during the civil war drummer boys sometimes didn't even have uniforms. Some wore what ever they had. Others, wore left over uniforms that usually did not fit. If you have any questions i would be glad to answer them! For other boys it depended on the side they were fighting for.
