Uniforms could vary based upon the purpose of the soldier. Example a Paratrooper would wear a different uniform than an infantryman or an airman.
Why a uniform?
Uniforms were issued because it was cheaper to mass produce them. And every soldier had to have something to wear that would identify him as a friend. Having common clothes and equipment made it easier to supply replacement items.
