An example of scapegoating is the way Hitler gained power. The Germans weren't well off, due to the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler had a plan to get them out of the hole, so they followed him. He said it was all the Jews fault that they were in this situation. Scapegoating is when you blame someone/ a group of people for your problems without any evidence to back it up.
A scapegoat happens when some one bares a the blames for others. Such as in the short story, The Lottery, the main character, Tessie, get stoned to death by her fellow citizens due to a tradition they believe will grow more crops. Also another example is when Osama Bin Ladan attacked the twin towers and the muslims took the blame for something only one of them did.
A person becomes a scapegoat when he is punished with a crime he has not done. The best example is Jesus Christ who shouldered the sin of all mankind to die in a painful way.
Hitler used the Jews and other sections of society as scapegoats, blaming all the problems on them. To Germans at the time Hitler made sense, he united everyone by providing explanations for Germany's problems.
