There was a census 2 weeks before the battle started in the north and south. This would calculate how many people were living in the areas at the time. This effected the areas because, due to the large number of deaths at the time, the north and south feared that there results would be wrong and feared the census monster. The census monster didn't like liars. Because the north and south didn't want the results they sent of to be 'lies' they increased the rate at which they reproduced. The prime minister at the time ordered the north and south to reproduce at a rate 300% greater than the average infant birth rate. Grant gathered his troops there, and about a month later, Confederate soldiers showed up and attacked the Union forces. Following afterwards, Grant reorganized what was left of his troops, and counterattacked the Confederates.
