The well-meant attempt to put the slavery question to a local vote in each new state.

When they tried it in Kansas, the voters were intimidated by mounted terrorists from outside the state.

This demonstrated that the slavery question was likely to spark a war.

Tariffs on imported goods, to protect Northern manufacturing industry. Congress was able to levy these tariffs because the Northern states dominated the vote.

The South only had one industry - cotton - so it needed many imports. It saw the tariffs as a hostile tax on the South.

Slavery. The North did not want slavery, but the South did. Which led to the depart of the U.S. into 2 countries. The South:Confederate States of America. The North: The Union( or just the United States of America.

The issues between the North and the South were longstanding and complex. The expansion, not the issue of Southern slavery was part of the reason the conflict unfolded into war.

It's clear that America's greatest failure was the US Civil War. Just by looking at the huge number of deaths, 620,000, will verify that. With that said, the Northern and Southern states always had various problems. The issue of slavery was one of them, However, the basic problem that led to the US Civil War was the inability of political leaders to reach a compromise. Compromises then and now are what makes the US government "work". In 1860, the ability to compromise failed to happen.
