During World War 2, in order to avoid the bombings, some women and most children were evacuated from the larger towns. The evacuations started in September 1939 and resulted in over 3 million people being evacuated. Evacuees were given gas masks and food for the journey to the county. Each child traveled with a label pinned to them stating their name, home address, school and destination.

Some were treated really well. they got luxuries they never seen before. Some even liked it better than their own home. However others got badly treated they had to work, some were beaten and others were seen as city scum!

It all depended on who they were with!

From 1942 onwards, German children were evacuated from many big cities - especially from industrial towns in the Ruhr. As far as possible, they were evacuated with their mothers.
