Over half of the 16 million served in the US Army, and more than an additional 2 million in the US Army Air Force, all under the command of US Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall. The US Air Force did not become an independent branch of the service until after the war was over, in 1947, and was a part of the US Army throughout WWII.
