Germany tried to take over Austria almost as soon as he came to power, and had the Austrian (leader) Dolfuss, murdered. He then tried again in March of 1938.

Hitler told the SS or SA to put pressure on Austria by parading through the streets of Austria demonstrating how good Germany is and how Austria should accept to the Anschluss 'Union' between Austria and Germany. These men were also violent and the Austrian police were struggling to control the violence and corruption. Then Hitler said something along the lines of: ''You seem to be having trouble, put my man in charge of the police force and he will sort everything out.'' The Austrian police were reluctant but Hitler had one of his raging furies at the new Austrian prime-minister and he gave up to Hitler. Hitler was so confident that he called a plebiscite 'vote' in which he cheated when German officials counted the votes, Hitler claimed that 99.75% of Austrian voters voted for the 'Anschluss' between Germany and Austria to be conducted. Hitler now had full power over Austria, had control over the whole Austrian army, and economic supplies such as iron and steel.

Without resistance.

Austria was already very in line with Germany's views before the war and sided with Germany from the beginning.

Most of the Austrian people spoke the German language already so it seemed a good idea for Hitler to take it over. He had failed before as Italy threatened to send troops if Germany sent troops into Austria, but Mussolini was on side now so Hitler tried again, he succeeded. Hitler said that the country could have a vote on whether to take the German rule (plebiscite), but it was biased because there were also German troops in the border and after the vote he claimed 99.75 % of the Austrian people wanted Germany's rule.

In 1938, Hitler and his Nazi Party acquired power over the independent nation of Austria mainly through diplomatic skill, powerful Propaganda, and sabotage and intimidation tactics. For months prior to the "Anschluss", the Nazis stirred up pro-Nazi sentiment within Austria, influenced the opinion of observers outside Germany and Austria, and applied pressure directly to Austrian leaders in their successful bid to annex the nation.

Austria was easy. The people voted nearly unanimously to join Germany and all Hitler had to do was occupy the capital. Czechoslovakia was harder. Hitler announced that a portion of Czechoslovakia spoke Germany and should belong to Germany. That region, known as the Sudentenland, was awarded to Hitler at the Munich Conference in return for promising to leave the rest Europe alone. Hitler broke that promise when he used military force to takeover the rest of Czechoslovakia.

Nazism was enormously popular in Austria at the time, and Hitler was welcomed with delirious applause in Linz and Vienna - applause that made even the Nuremberg rallies seem tame.
