Inflammation of the pancreas is known as "Pancreatitis". During pancreatitis, the pancreas begins to essentially digest its own tissue, as the digestive enzymes that it produces stay trapped within. Patients with pancreatitis will present with abdominal pain (sometimes swelling). Other symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting (which does not relieve the nausea) and an abdomen that is tender to the touch. The most common causes of pancreatitis are alcohol abuse and gall stones which account for 80%-90% of instances.
It is called pancreatitis. The ending -itis literally means "inflammation of".
