Maltitol is a good sugar alternative. It is half as caloric and it does not promote tooth decay. It also has a lesser effect on blood glucose. It has nearly identical properties to sugar with 75-90% of its sweetness.
I recently called pet poison control about this. Apparently it is not the same as xylitol (which is highly dangerous) but I would suggest calling your vet anyway just to be sure. Since my dog ate chocolate they told me to watch for vomiting and such but they didn't seem to think the maltitol itself was dangerous.
