A physician is licensed to assess, examine, diagnose, and treat patients with a variety of illnesses or conditions in addition to evaluating the "well patient".

Physicians begin with data collection and documenting. Doctors ask standard questions designed to elicit the most information. For example, doctors can collect clues from family history.

Next, physicians examine the patient. At minimum, this should include vital signs, blood pressure, and listen to the patient's lungs and abdomen. These "listening" skills are done with a stethoscope and the skill is called auscultation.

The doctor may also use palpation. To palpate means to touch for purposes of an exam. For example, when a doctor places his hand on your abdomen and presses inward, this is palpation.

Physicians may use certain in-office testing. For example, with a small rubber "hammer", the doctor can test reflexes.

Physicians must chart their findings and diagnoses with the treatment plan.
