There are age, weight, and health requirements that an individual must meet before they can donate blood to ensure safety, both their own and the potential recipients, too. An under-weight person could be at health risk if they lose blood, even through donation.

In the U.S., FDA guidelines allow a maximum of 10.5 ml/kg body weight to be collected. The majority of blood collection facilities use 500 ml collection sets, with up to an additional 50 ml allowed to be collected for required screening tests. As such, a lower weight limit of 50 kg (110 lbs) is mandated.

This is because if you don't weigh enough, the amount of blood they have to take for a blood donation is too much for a small body like that. beachball45

I went to donate blood and my blood was tested and I was told I could not donate because my blood floated when in was put in a chemical. What causes the blood to float when tested?

Iron is heavy, and iron is a big part of red blood cells.  If your drop of blood floats on the chemical, it means that there is not enough iron in the blood to make it sink.  If you don't have enough iron, you are anaemic and should see your doctor to find out why.
