The major diameter is the diameter of the crest of the thread. Use a Vernier gage and mesure the diameter of the crest points of contact ( maximum external thread diameter). Unified National thread series defines the expected major diamter and tolerance.
For internal threads ( nuts) the major diameter is the diameter of the roots of the thread.
This is a tool that is used to measure the pitch diameter of a screw. This tool looks like a standard micrometer except that the anvils are specially configured to reach into the screw thread groove and touch the pitch diameter of the screw thread. The screw thread micrometer does not measure any other aspect of the screw thread. It does not measure the: pitch; threads-per-inch; major diameter; minor diameter; flank angles; lead; helix angle.
floating carriage diameter measuring machine is design to have accurate of major, minor and pitch diameters of precision screw threads as well as those of odd flutes screw taps.
There are two major known types of companion flanges. The internal and external pilots which are a type ''S'' and '' A'' respectively.

Metric fastener size designation nomenclature. As fully explained in ISO 965-1, Sect. 5, metric fastener size designations always begin with capital M or MJ followed by fastener nominal diameter and thread pitch, both in units of millimeters (mm), separated by the symbol "x", as follows. M10 x 1.5-6g-S means metric fastener thread profile M, fastener nominal size (nominal major diameter) 10 mm, thread pitch 1.5 mm, external thread tolerance class 6g, and thread engagement length group S ("short"). If referring to internal thread tolerance, "g" would be capitalized. A fit between threaded parts is indicated by internal thread tolerance class followed by external thread tolerance class separated by a slash; e.g., M10 x 1.5-6H/6g.
A thread may be either right-hand or left-hand. A right-hand thread on an external member advances into an internal thread when turned clockwise; a left-hand thread advances when turned counterclockwise. If a single helical groove is cut or formed on a cylinder, it is called a single-thread screw. Should the helix angle be increased sufficiently for a second thread to be cut between the grooves of the first thread, a double thread will be formed on the screw. Double, triple, and even quadruple threads are used whenever a rapid advance is desired, as on valves.Pitch and major diameter designate a thread. Lead is the distance advanced parallel to the axis when the screw is turned one revolution. For a single thread, lead is equal to the pitch; for a double thread, lead is twice the pitch. For a straight thread, the pitch diameter is the diameter of an imaginary coaxial cylinder that would cut the thread forms at a height where the width of the thread and groove would be equal.Thread forms have been developed to satisfy particular requirements. Where strength is required for the transmission of power and motion, a thread having faces that are more nearly perpendicular to the axis is preferred. These threads, with their strong thread sections, transmit power nearly parallel to the axis of the screw. This sounds like an easy question, but the answer depends on which type of thread call-out you are trying to read. There are multiple types of screw threads and each has its own call-out; but many are similar in syntax. The most common screw thread style in the USA is the UN-series. These screw threads are specified in ANSI/ASME B.1. An example of a UN-series thread call-out is: 1/4"-20 UNC-2A Decoded it is: Nominal Major Diameter (1/4")-Threads-per-inch (20) Type of thread (UN) Sub-thread-series (C)-Class-of-fit (2A) An example of the M-series thread call-out is: M16x1.5-6g Decoded it is: Type of thread (M) Nominal major diameter (16) Thread pitch (1.5) class-of-fit (6g) For more detailed information here is a link to a nice PDF book which gives very clear basic information on screw threads: http://www.ring-plug-thread-gages.com/ti_starret.pdf.
