Quantitative data represents Quantity in numbers representing how many how much or how often. As examples:

  1. There are 300 homes and 26 businesses in X town.
  2. Of the 300 homes, 232 have a male Head of Household.
  3. Of the 232 with a male Head of Household, 200 are married.
  4. Of the 200 males who are Head of Household and married, 162 have at least one child in the home.
  5. Of the 26 businesses, 14 are corporate-run; 6 are franchises; and the remaining 6 have private owners.
  6. Of the 6 businesses privately owned, 5 are owned by men; 1 is owned by a woman.
  7. The average monthly income of the 6 privately owned businesses is $5,945.00 with 5 stores operating part time, and one store operating 18 hours a day.
  8. Of the 6 privately owned businesses, only 1 (operating 18 hours a day) employs more than 5 employees.

On the other hand, in QUALITATIVE research, Quality categories are used about a person or people or location business etc. For example:

  1. Of X town, there are 75 males and 80 females who are senior citizens over age 80; an equal number of 32 males and 32 females are over age 40; 200 males and 205 females are over age 21 but under age 40; and there are 192 children aged 14 to 20; and 90 children from age 1 week to age 13 years old. Girls under age 20 account for 40% of the children, with 49% of girls under age 13. Boys under age 20 account for 33% ; and 76% under age 13 yrs old.
  2. Of X town, 32% of the total population are African American; 52% are Caucasian; and the remaining are Asian, Hispanic, or of another descent.
  3. X town has 2 High Schools; 1 middle school; and 1 Elementary School with one combined Elementary-Middle School under construction.
  4. At least 10% of children are bused to a neighboring county. 7% of children attend a private school in a nearby larger city.
  5. Of children who ride the bus for local schools, average total time spent on the bus round-trip is 25 minutes a day. Of children who are bused to a neighboring county, time spent on the bus round-trip is 35 minutes. Private school children transported by parents average 45 minutes total each day in the families' cars.
  6. Coursework differs only in the private schools, which offer more arts and music. Nearly 85% of children in public local schools average a B+ for the standard curriculum. Nearly 75% of children in the neighboring county schools average a C.
  7. Teachers in X Town's Schools have a minimum of a Master's degree.
  8. There are 5 Teacher Assistants in each school who each have Bachelor's degrees. However, only 6 of the 15 Aides have a BA in Education. One has a BA in Computer Science, and 14 have a BA in Liberal Arts studies.
  9. Each school encourages parent participation. Typically, 90% of the volunteers are mothers. Only 7% of fathers participate. 2% are grandmothers. (Note: nothing is 100% in statistics)
  10. Of the 2% grandmothers who volunteer, 1 grandmother is raising grandchildren but has never worked outside the home; 1 grandmother is a retired school teacher (but she is not raising any grandchild in her home). No grandfathers for these two grandmothers participate, because both grandmothers are widows. No other information is known about other grandparents.

*Qualities in Qualitative reseatch are descriptions: Age, sex (gender); occupation; type (of school for example), etc. But qualitative can use numbers, like in quantitative research.
