Original answer: "the roman numeral DMII means: D=1000, M=500 and II=2 so DMII means 1502"
Actually, with reference to the following article and many other references: What_is_300_400_500_600_700_800_900_1000_2000_3000_4000_5000_in_roman_figures
DMII means 502. The year 1971 is MCMLXXI, because M = 1000, and the C (100) before the M (1000) is a basic form of subtraction. The two M's represent the year 2000, so MCM = 100 before the 2nd M 1000 = 1900, and then L=50, X=10 & I=1 (becomes addition of numbers after the subtraction).
Therefore DMII, where D=500, and D before the M is 500 numbers before 1000, (which is 500!), so then it is '500 + 2' (or '+ II').
Hope this helps. I know this because MMXII (as seen at the end of BBC programmes) means the year 2012, simply 2xM, or 2x1000=2000,
then the X which is 10, so 10 + 2=12, then 2000+12=2012.
