As well as having numerals for integers the Romans also had symbols for fractions of 12, the symbol for 6/12 (a half) looked like the letter S and the Latin word for it was semismeaning a half.
Therefore, half of 9 in Roman numerals is IIIIS (4+1/2) or SV (5-1/2).
