It should be written as 'VIII' not with the curved tail.

It is the Roman Numeral for 8 = VIII

In Roman numerals

I = 1

V = 5

X = 10

L = 50

C = 100

D = 500

M = 1000

For all Roman Numerals the letter for the larger value is ALWAYS placed to the left.

You then for increasing numbers place a letter of the same value to the right. e.g. 2 = II and 3 = III

For subtraction you always place the lower value letter to the immediate left of the number being subtracted.

e.g. 4 = IV = 5 - 1

The current years of 2023 is MMXXIII That is M + M + X + X + I + I + I =

1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 2023

Next year ,2024 = MMXXIV That is M + M + X + X + I + I - I + V =

1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 - 1 + 5 = 2024.

Classical Clock faces often use Roman Numerals for the hours, rather than modern Arabic numbers.
