Day by day, God created the universe and its contents (Genesis ch.1).God created the universe out of nothing (Exodus 20:11, Isaiah 40:28; Rashi commentary to Genesis 1:14; Maimonides' "Guide," 2:30).Note that the Torah, in describing the Creation, deliberately employs brevity and ellipsis, just as it does in many other topics. See the Talmud, Hagigah 11b.

No, God rested on the 7th day.
On the first 6 days . . . everything. On the 7th day. . . . . . nothing. You can find the detailed, itemized lists in the first chapter or two of Genesis. Surely, somebody as interested in the subject as you are must own a Bible.
As far as i know its because the catholics believe God created the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th. So people waited for the 7th day, aka sunday, to rest and the calender was made with this idea.
The first six are for the days it took God to create the earth, The seventh is for the day of the Sabbath, the eight is the rebirth or baptism of Christians.
