Please tell me the denomination of the coin - that is, is it a dime, quarter, half-dollar, etc. I will be able to relay its value once I am aware of its denomination and mint state.
Retail values for G-4 to VF-20 are $13.00-$25.00/EF-40 $47.00/ AU-50 to AU-58 $132.00-$210.00/ Mint state starts at $252.00
Correction to the below responsePlease check your coin's date and post a new, separate question. Arrows weren't added to half dimes until 1853. All 1845 half dimes had blank space on either side of the date. Most coins show heavy wear and have retail values of $14.00-$25.00 better grade coins are $50.00 to over $100.00 depending on grade.
As of 12/2008, price ranges are as follows. If your coin has an "O" mint mark it may be worth about 10% more in each condition. well-worn: $15 moderately worn: $29 almost uncirculated: $132
Because the value of it is worth half the value of a dime.
An 1853 half dime with arrows is typically more valuable than one without arrows. The arrows were added to denote a slight change in weight to combat hoarding during the time and are considered more desirable by collectors.
Assuming no arrows or a mint mark in "good" retail is $25.00-$35.00
$65
The British didn't make a half dime.
Please check your coin again and post a new, separate question. No half dimes were minted at San Francisco until 1863.
I am not aware of such a coin. The Draped Bust Half Dime was minted from 1796 - 1797; the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Half Dime was minted from 1800 - 1805; the Capped Bust Half Dime was minted from 1829 - 1837; and the Liberty Seated Half Dime was minted from 1837 - 1873.
No such coin exists. The US nickel would not be minted until 1866. Before that, the 5 cent coin was the silver half-dime and even then, the coin had nothing on it that bore resemblance to an American Indian. And the Indian head penny wouldn't be minted until later than 1853.
The initial 5 cent coins minted by the US mint were the Shield 5 cent coins - and they were initially minted in the year 1866. Prior to that, the Draped Bust Half Dime, Capped Bust Half Dime, and the Seated Liberty Half Dime were minted. However, there were NO 5 cent coins minted in the year of 1815.
Mintage figures were not very reliable until the 20th century, since coins were often minted by weight rather than a specific quantity or value. There were about 2.7 million British 1853 Half-Sovereigns minted.
From $25-$350US depending on condition.
