Hermeneutics is a methodology for the interpretation of a text, which considers what language says, supposes, does not say, and implies. Biblical hermeneutics is a special form of hermeneutics, for the interpretation of The Bible itself, and assumes that the real meaning of a passage can only be found by referring to similar passages found elsewhere in the Bible.

In studying the Book of Genesis, it is important to remember that it was compiled from the works of several authors, not just one, and that the earliest contributions began with separate oral traditions in Judah and Israel. And even those oral traditions probably evolved and changed over time, before finally being put down in writing by the Elohist and the Yahwist. This makes a more than superficial study of Genesis most particularly challenging.
