John wrote Revelation when he was a prisoner on the Isle of Patmos for preaching about Jesus(Revelation 1:1,2+9), but it is generally believed that he wrote his gospel and his three 'epistles'(1John, 2John, 3John) after he was released from Patmos and was living near Ephesus.
