The Israelites were an ethnic group that was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BCE and then ceased to exist from that point forward. Only the southern Hebrew kingdom of Judah, from which the earliest Jews were descended, continued to exist.

The term Muslim refers to followers of the Islamic religion, who can be members of any ethnic group. The modern nation of Israel, whose citizens are called Israelis, does include some Muslims and Christians. Theoretically, a Jew could become a Muslim, but would no doubt then no longer be considered a Jew by his or her former peers.
