Equations are a short way of writing an often complex series of events. It also explains the relationship between two or more things.

E=Mc2 is such an equation.

It shows how energy (that is the 'E' in the equation) can equal matter or mass (that is the 'M' in the equation). The 'c' refers to a constant, (in this case the speed of light, which is a very fast speed indeed!)

This is how you read the equation; Energy is equal to Mass multiplied by the speed of light squared. Squaring a number simply means multiplying it by itself.

It is important that the units are chosen carefully. So for mass we use grams, for energy we use ergs and for the speed of light we use metres per second. We use these units here because they are all SI or metric units.

We know the speed of light is roughly 300,000,000 metres per second so if you square that you get 90,000,000,000,000,000

So if you have one gram of matter, and that is any matter at all, (a gram of rubbish is the same as a gram of gold here) you would multiply that big number by 1 and get 90,000,000,000,000,000 ergs of energy.

In all processes you always waste some energy but that is the most you can get.

So in you have more than I gram just multiply it by that big number and it will tell you how many ergs of energy you could get if you could convert it all to energy.

Working the other way you would need that amount of energy to create I gram of matter.
