The ancient Romans had no real reasons for such large numbers and in fact their original numeral system contained only five symbols which were I V X L and C representing 1 5 10 50 and 100 respectively. For 500 and 1000 it once was I) and (I) later changed to D and M.

Today we would express such huge numbers in scientific notation thus using less digits but retaining the number's original value.
