Different forms of advertising came about from different sources. Early advertising had the job of selling to a mostly illiterate population. It most likely began with people marketing their goods in a street or marketing setting, calling out what they had for sale or the merits of their goods. This is the origin of the term 'hawking their wares'. There are places where people still do this. The first forms of written advertisements were shops or vendors who used pictures tell you what they were selling. Signs that may have shown a tankard for a tavern, or a sheep for a butcher, or a hammer for a tin smith. This is the early origin of the 'logo'. Early written advertisements might also include public notices posted to an appropriate door or public place. Eventually, the two types came together in the form of signs with the shop name written and a pictorial depiction; a ships outfitter would put the name of the company with the picture of an anchor. Advertising evolved as the use of written language evolved.

One of my favorite depictions of a vendor calling out their wares is in the movie, 'King Creole', a woman is calling out 'crawfish', which Elvis turns into a song. You can find many uses of early forms of advertising still in use today, from the car equipped with loudspeaker on top driving through the street selling a politician or event to the signs of many shops and stores that still use words with pictures.
