The verb of civil is civilise. As in "to civilise someone or oneself".
The noun forms of the verb to civilise (civilize) are civiliser (civilizer), civilisation (civilization). and the gerund, civilising (civilizing).

The duty of having to govern, civilise and generally look after poor, backward native folk in countries outside Europe. Robbing them blind was just an incidental perk of the job.
