It's a place where you can learn more advanced Etiquette , beyond everyday basic good manners. How to behave at formal functions, the Opera or theater, diplomatic functions, and foreign customs for specific places you may be visiting. This used to quaintly be referred to as Charm School. You would also be taught good posture , how to walk without clomping about, sit without plunking down, cross your legs at your ankles in a ladylike fashion, and how to defer to elders and others in conversation. Young men are taught how to seat ladies at table, assist them in and out of vehicles , pin on a corsage , how to invite a lady to dance, and the etiquette of dance programs [ this has fallen into disuse with a few exceptions ], and how to assist ladies on and off with their coats or wraps. Most of these niceties are not used so much in daily life , but can be modified to fit the circumstances, and may come in handy when you least expect, making you stand out in a good way .
