Yes, Socks should be worn with tap shoes, especially if they're brand new to protect yourself from getting blisters and hotspots. I do not recommend that you wear thick socks as it will be tough for you to get your feet in your shoes. Personally, I wore thin nylon dress socks with my tap shoes as they felt more comfortable and it was easier for me to slip my foot in my shoes. I also wear thin dress socks with my character shoes as well.
