∙ 14y agoif your horse has been laying down that long, there is a big problem and you need to call a vet. it sounds like colic.
The horse may have collic and you would want to visit a vet as soon as possible. but that depends on how long the horse hasn't been drinking the type of climate it is in and is the horse laying down alot?
Yes they can, and in fact a horse can only get REM sleep by laying down.
She could very well be in labor. Keep an eye on her and hopefully soon you will see the birthing sack and the foals front feet stick out.
this depends on what your definition is of a 'long time'. Horses must sleep laying down to get full REM sleep, but this only lasts for a few minutes. Some horses also like to lay on their sides in the sun to rest. However if a horse has been down for an hour or more, or is extremely still while laying down it would be best to check the horse and call a equine veterinarian.
First, the horse will raise his head (if he is laying it down). Then, he will get his front legs up, and his hind legs will follow. I hope this helps!

'Laying' is the present participle of 'lay' and as such is a transitive verb. That means that it must have an object, whether stated or implied. For example: 'My hens have been laying very few eggs recently.' 'He was laying the table for dinner a few minutes ago.' 'The president will be laying down her power at the end of her term of office.' 'They are laying odds of 5 to 1 on that horse.' 'The hens are laying well' (the object 'eggs' is understood). 'I'm laying on that horse to win in this race' (the object 'a bet' is understood). 'We are just laying her on the bed till she feels better.' 'Laying' should not be confused with 'lying', which is intransitive. For example: 'She was lying on the bed till she felt better', not 'She was laying on the bed till she felt better.'
It is not good for a horse to lay down because people think that the circulation of the blood stops flowing through their legs, and they may lay down if they hurt something. From Horsense4u.com: Horses often lay down with no complications. They will lie on their side, then on the other side and often on their chest. Many will lay down to sleep. A relaxed horse will lay down and enjoy the warmth of the earth and from the sunshine
it has to go!
