A foxes tail is used to balance, or display emotion, like other animals, most easy to compare to a dog. They wag their tails when happy.
Or, you can compare the balancing to a tightrope walker using a pole to balance itself.
When foxes are climbing hills, they can balance their weight with their tail. It can also help when they are running and jumping.

A fox's tail serves as something of a blanket that it uses to protect its nose and paw pads from the cold. The tail is also used for communication.

In addition to the above, the tail is also used as a counterbalance while the fox is running/turning.

Because it is either an adaptation with an advantage or an adaptation that doesn't inhibit the fox. The tail functions to help with balance and manuverability.
