Because, of old folk lore that has circled through the Middle Ages, said "Wolf-man" which gave the tale of the "were-wolf." This man was someone who murdered children and many families in the woods, even his own blood, and had a disease which made him think he was a wolf, and was carnivorously dining on his victims flesh, which caused fear amongst everyone, fear of the wolf-man.

And, the old nursery rhymes sometimes have "the big bad wolf."

I, personally, love wolves and I hate how people stereotype them as evil canines.

Wolves are smart animals. But people dislike them because they harm farm animals and they did not mean to kill other people's animal. Wolves are good most of the time. They can raise other animal's young that they found. People should not hate wolves.

Sly? Probably. Cunning? Absolutely - they have to be to survive - any wild animal does. Mean? Not unless they're cornered.
