Prior to the suspension of inspection for horse slaughter plants in the US in 2007, horses were killed by first stunning the animal so that it was rendered insensible to pain immediately after the stunning then was bled out through severing the jugular veins and carotid arteries in the neck. This is still the method used in Canada and the regulated slaughter houses in Mexico.
Mexico: Stabbed to death.
Canada: Clubbed to death
China: A combination of stabbing and beating
Japan: Same as china. (Japanese belive the more an animal is tortured the better it tastes)
US: Shot in the head and while fully contious hung by their back legs ,get their throat cut, and left to bleed to death.
The slaughter of horses became a problem when horses were replaced by cars and their worth was diminished in the eyes of humans.
No it is not illegal to export horses for slaughter.
Peta
A horse slaughter plant is a place where mean people kill healthy, old, or injured horses for food or money.THEY_ARE_SO_CRUEL!">THEY ARE SO CRUEL!Horse slaughter is not illegal, although it should be. Yes, people do eat horses. In the United states it is considered illegal to slaughter horses for human consumption, but in many countries horse meat is considered no different than cow meat.
People have several options if they are trying to sell horses and they can't.1. Donate; They can donate the horse to research facilities, or even companies that make horse feed as a 'test subject'.2. Slaughter; Slaughter is an option in some countries, but not all. The seller will likely only recoup a tiny amount of money in comparison to the cost of breeding/ training / raising the horse. 3. Lease; The owner can lease out the horse to another person, allowing them to get relief from the cost of owning it, yet still maintain control of how the horse is kept.4. Euthanasia; The kindest option is often having the horse put to sleep, this is often done to prevent 'pet' or family horses from going to slaughter, or winding up in a bad home. It is inexpensive and the body can be disposed of in multiple ways.
