Assuming that this question means, "Why do rabbits HAVE long teeth?"

Rabbits' teeth are not acutally supposed to be that long. Most of the time they are no more than 3/4 of an inch long.

According to the American Rabbit Breeders Association Standard of Perfection, rabbit teeth are to exhibit an overbite, which mean the top teeth go over the bottom teeth.

(And obviously fit in their mouths when closed. It is merely depicted in many Cartoons that rabbits have buck teeth that stick out of their mouth.)

In fact, "buck teeth" otherwise known as "wolf teeth," "butting teeth," or "malocclusion" is considered a disqualification in show by the American Rabbit Breeders Association Standard of Perfection. This includes any of the above terms, along with an underbite (bottom teeth overlap the top teeth), and broken or chipped teeth.

Malocclusion (a fancy word meaning that the teeth arent growing properly) can be a very serious matter when it comes to rabbits. If left untreated, the rabbit's teeth may continue to grow until either they disable the rabbit from eating; or may even grow into the roof of the mouth, through the bottom jaw, or even into the brain. Which will eventually kill the rabbit.

Malocclusion can either be caused from an injury, or be genetic. It is most commonly found it breeds with very round heads, such as the Netherland Dwarf, the Dutch, etc.

It is advised when a rabbit is diagnosed with malocclusion that it be either put down, or have its teeth trimmed regularly by a local rabbit breeder or a veterinarian. Malocclusion is usually an on-going ailment, but in some cases, if caught early, can be reversed and put back to normal.
