Communication. The howl/screech to let other males know it is their territory and to make females aware they are nearby. It is also used to startle prey from hiding as they make their way through the area. A mouse or rabbit in hiding may dart away when the fox howls bringing the prey to the attention of the fox.

Foxes do not howl. Wolves howl. Foxes have a bark similar to that of a small dog and a variety of other whines and yelps and growls but do not howl.
