They are not mean if bred correctly. They do have a tendency to be dog aggressive, however a well balanced pit will not be mean towards puppies.
Pit bulls are not mean at all it depends on the owner. If you keep them cooped up and never pay attention to them they will be but all the pit bulls have met have been really good dogs. I have a pit bull mix and he is the most nice puppy you will ever meet. In fact he is a complete gentlemen and my aunts dog is old and he is a sweetheart and he will lay by you and wag his tail. I would say the only thing bad about pit bulls if they are raised right is their hard tail that will hurt you if it hits you but other wise if you can train them right you will have a wonderful and loyal companion not only that but a best friend.

Often times the smaller dogs start the bad behavior, but your average owner does not know how to read dog body language. If you socialize your pit bull like a responsible owner they will be great with other dogs. I've owned five and all were socialized and loved everyone, I used to take them to the dog park every day. Also Pit bulls are a member of the Terrier group, and terriers have a high prey drive.
I have never had or heard somebody in the pitbull breed club that I am, having problems like this. As far as I am concerned, these problems are a result of bad training and raising of the dog.
I have grown up with a medium size pit bull and she grow up with babies of dogs and some bunnies and is really kind, sure she would accidentally bite you because she is still a 4 year old dog, but the bites to the puppies is probably by fault of how the dog grow up, it environment or past of him, some are used for fights so just try to teach him to be softer or hire a dog trainer
Pitbulls do not naturally kill other dogs. Their owners have taken advantage of their natural aggressive nature to teach this.
