John Kiernan was the chief farrier for the US Army during the Civil War and visited Grant's farm in Missouri frequently. His letter to Grant during that time was concerning a libel in the press concerning the farm. See the Related Link.

The practice of the Union Army was to send one farrier/blacksmith with each troop of 82-100 men. The Army's horses were vital to their victory over the South, so they had to be taken care of. Sometimes they had shoes, whereas the enlisted men didn't.
Point of interest: Gen. Grant's favorite horse was Cincinnati. His other horses' names were Methuselah, Rondy, Fox, Jack, Jeff Davis, and Kangaroo.
