This is a common phrase in the Ozarks where I live, years ago, folks around here would let their hogs run free, and gather them in the fall. They hogs would forage on mast and survive as best they could. It is said "even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while" to express the thought that even the most incompentent can get lucky on occasion.
