Back before the time of modern civilization, before the time of Romans, the calendar was a very confusing thing. The Romans, being the mathematical and civilized, felt a need to recognize the system and created the calendar that we follow today.

Originally, they used only ten months. Later the Roman mathematicians moved on to twelve months structure by adding two months at the beginning of the year. this placement was not to avoid interference with the placement of the holidays located at the end of the year.
