There's no real time when a horse is too old, but usually a mare will stop conceiving or will abort the foal if she can't carry it for some reason. Most mares stop breeding in their early 20s.

You don't want to start riding, or even training a horse to be ridden until they are at least five years old. That is when the average horse is finished growing, and their bones have finished fusing. If you start training them before hand, it is like having a baby lift weights. It's is going to cause future lameness. You should get x-rays to make sure that your horse is finished growing as some horses don't finish growing until they are six.

You have an x-ray on the ovaries and the vet will be able to tell by the condition of them/ But they will probably just know when they feel them.

It will probably be allowed to have a foal once it is three years old, though it was probably physically capable before that.

If the mare has never foaled before I wouldn't breed her after the age of 15. If she is in good shape and has foaled before 18 to 20 years old.

Horses can go into estrus at a year old, though their bodies are not developed enough to produce or maintain a healthy foal. Most feral horses begin having foals at just two years of age.
