The best thing to do with a captured opossum is to let it go. They are passive. They eat what is available and ,like most animal that which is most easily reached. It has been written that opossum do not give off an odor. I know from personal experience they do give off a very foul odor when startled, threatened and/or cornered, particularly the males.

When dealing with opossums, it is best to live and let live. They are smart animals and will scurry away and hide once they are aware they are being observed. They seem to prefer rotting fruit on the ground to fresh fruit still on the tree. They really like high protein cat and dog food.

They are essentially non aggressive creatures and avoid contact with other mammals, therefore rarely carry diseases like rabies. So, unless a opossum attempts to charge you unprovoked and tries to knaugh on your leg, best to to just put food like cat-food and garbage out of their reach and leave them be.

Opossums are are not frequent defenders (of food, territory, even mates) but they do have many nicely pointed sharp teeth! They will bite if pushed to and leave a nasty wound to a predator such a dog, cat, or person.

Iff you are in Australia you are allowed to tap a possum if it is in your house or roof, however you have to let it go out side after having blocked of the way it got into the house obviously

Carefully pick it up by wrapping it in a blanket or towel. Hold it in a secure location that is dark and quiet. Call an experienced wildlife rehabilitator to take the animal for care.
