First NEVER turn your back on a bear and run! This can insight the bear to chase and attack. The best defence against bears is to always let them hear you coming with bells on your clothes or by constantly making some sort of noise as you hike, most bears will take off and avoid contact. If you still encounter a bear you need to be loud, aggressive and try to look scary. Flip your jacket over your head and scream at the animal. An air horn scares the heck out of some, carrying one is not a bad idea.
Most adult bears cannot climb a tree very well so if you have to climb one to get out of immediate danger. Even if the bear still chases you up a tree you have a way better chance kicking him in the nose and face while he trys to get up than you would fighting him on the ground for sure!
So not run it will chase you and you can NOT outrun a bear... If it stands on its Back legs or tries to lean closer this is not a sign of aggression he is getting a better look or smelling you. Back away slowly and do not look them in the eye!!! If you are with someone get on their shoulders or let them get on yours to make yourself look taller and bigger than the bear.
back away slowly. keep eye contact. and never scream or run. stay come and make yourself as big as possible. make loud yelling noise but not high pitched because they may mestake u for A animal
Step 1
Learn about different types of bears. Black bears can climb trees and sometimes attack in a predatory manner. Grizzly and polar bears are more likely to attack in self-defense.
Step 2
Know how to identify bears. Grizzly bears are large and have a hump just behind their shoulders. Black bears are smaller and have rounded ears and a long snout. Polar bears are white.
Step 3
Make some noise when you are in the woods, so you don't surprise a bear. Sing or talk loudly to let a bear know that you are coming and that you are human (not prey).
Step 4
If you encounter a bear, don't run. Back away slowly and talk to the bear. Let the bear hear your voice but do not shout.
Step 5
Play dead. If a bear attacks in self-defense and makes contact, lay face down and stay very still. If you do not appear to be a threat, the bear may leave you alone.
Step 6
Fight back. If a bear makes a predatory attack, fight back as hard as you can. Once a bear find out you aren't easy prey, they may leave you alone. Scream, kick, punch, hit the bear with rocks or branches, or use bear spray if you have it.
