The answer depends on what you're looking for in a pet. In comparison to a domestic cat or dog, rabbits or guinea pigs offer little, in that they don't bond strongly to a human, and generally like to be well fed, watered, and be left alone.
Between a guinea pig and a rabbit, you should consider their space requirements (guinea pigs are generally smaller and require slightly less space). When being handled by small children, you might want to consider the fact that a slightly larger rabbit might be less fragile and more able to defined itself against being mishandled - but then, you'd probably get a pet to teach the children how not to mishandle the animal in the first place!
Guinea pig. Bunnies are cute but fragile-ask anyone.
At a local pet store, or, a much better option, at a guinea pig rescue.

Definitely a guinea pig. Rabbits have very strong hind legs and tend to kick hard. They are also a lot bigger.
