Dolphins are usually in pods and are not too commonly seen alone. They have strength in numbers. Also, dolphins are a strong species and are rarely hunted by natural predators so humans are their main threat. Dolphins are a friendly species and don't generally bite so they are not able to strongly protect themselves against humans but they are very fast creatures, which also helps.
