A horses tail is blocked for showing by having alcohol injected into the tail to kill a nerve or by having the nerve and muscle cut to keep the tail from moving. Sometimes the muscle or nerves can recover some mobility but usually this is not the case. Also some horse may be able to 'wiggle' the tail a bit from side to side but not up and down and never enough to communicate or swat flies away. In most horses it will remain permanently blocked and thus useless. Tail blocking is usually only done by dishonest riders and trainers who don't care about the horses welfare or comfort, it is a common cover up for poor riding and training practices.

Why do people block horse tails?

Tail blocking is done to deaden the horses ability to move their tails in the show ring. When a horse swishes it's tail vigorously in the ring it is usually a sign of displeasure which will cause most competitors to lose points and thus lose the show. The main cause of tail swishing is bad training and riding on the owners part and they use illegal tail blocking as a way to hide their flaws. It is a cruel practice and is illegal, but not always enforced.

How does a horse use its tail to talk to humans?

A horse can use its tail to communicate with humans in many ways. For example, when a horse is experiencing pain or discomfort, it tucks its tail in tightly. However, a horse with colic may carry its tail at an unnaturally high angle away from its body. A horse swishes its tail from side to side violently when it is annoyed, whilst a particularly irritated animal may even swish it up and down, When the tail is carried high and the horse is prancing or cantering, it means the horse is in high spirits. General contentment is indicated by a tail in a relaxed state.
