As far as I know, all of the characters in Polar Express are given descriptive names only- Hero Boy, Railroad conductor, engineer, etc. various crew members and passengers. Of Course Santa Claus is named, but he"s special. The anonymity angle is unusual and here used to advantage, suggesting a dream setting. It doesn't work so well in novels and movies that aim at realilsm or plausibility such as Wells" Time Machine ( the lead character is only referred to as the Time Traveller) or Anne-Marie, a film scripted by airman-writer St. Exuperby around l936. Apart from Anne-Marie, all characters are merely descriptive- the Aircraft mechanic, news reporter, etc.
