An albino rat will have no color - that is red / pink eyes, only white fur with no other pigmentation. An albino rat will have no color on their tail either, it should be pinkish. I have a white rat that I thought was albino, but as he grew older, there was some slight pigmentation on his tail, a little bit of brown/black. This means he's not a true albino, as there is pigmentation.
They definatly can be. My rat is an albino, and she's the sweetest thing in the world.
well, is it an East African black rat? or is it a North American albino white rat?
everything dies at some point in time.
Like any other rat. ^ This was the original answer. While for the most part I agree, I just want to add that an albino rats do have impaired eyesight as well as sense of smell. You will notice that your albino rat will engage in head swaying. This helps them see better. Also, your albino rat's eyes are more sensitive to light and damage in general. Polka Dot is my first rat and she is also albino. She's gorgeous and lovely but you can tell when I rearrange her cage, put her someplace she hasn't been, or put her in her ball she does have a very hard time seeing where she's going. Just remember, especially when first bonding with your albino rat, that you need to take things slower than with other rats. Here's more information;
This usually is a sign that you have an albino rat, albino means that there is no pigment or color this is not a disease it is just the way it was born. Genotypes of the parent rats must be Bb (black) and bb (white). The ratio of black to white offspring suggests the parent rats were heterozygous and homozygous recessive, respectively. The genotype ratio of the offspring would be 4:2:4 (BB:Bb:bb).
Not necessarily. Lab rats can come in various coat colors and eye colors, including white with red eyes, but it doesn't automatically mean that your rat is specifically a lab rat. It's best to consider other factors in determining if your rat is a lab rat, such as where she was obtained from and her overall behavior and health.
