Vomiting in a ferret is usually caused by a foreign substance in its stomach or upper intestine, something they may have chewed on and swallowed (rubber, foam, cloth, etc) or hairballs from seasonal change of shedding. Get a ferret hairball laxative (or cat laxative). If there is no improvement by the second day, a veterinarian visit is necessary. A ferret can die a painful death from stomach blockage. Vomiting/Diarrhea - Ferrets have a very short digestive tract and digest food in about 3 to 4 hours from the stomach to the large intestine. Ferrets do have the ability to vomit, buy they usually don't, like dogs or cats, if something they ate disagrees with them or a sudden change in diet. If your ferret is vomiting or passing diarrhea multiple times over two to three hours, passes blood in the vomit or stool or is exhibiting sudden or increasing weakness along with the vomiting or diarrhea, it is important that you should seek immediate veterinary attention. Blood in vomit can be bright red or look like coffee grounds.
Causes - Vomiting and diarrhea in a ferret are problems related directly to the intestinal tract - infections, obstructions, cancer, gastroenteritis, sudden changes in diet. Toxins - plants, insecticides, pesticides, household cleaners (Pinesol), and overdose of medication. Other causes could be kidney or liver disease or any disease that causes metabolic changes.
• Action - Do not give a vomiting ferret anything. Contact your veterinarian for further instructions. If your pet is noticeably weak or is passing blood in the vomit or diarrhea, seek immediate veterinary attention. If possible, collect samples to take the veterinarian for evaluation.
