In my area, they use mastiffs, Rhodesian ridgebacks, and occasionally, a wolf-dog. But, the, grey wolves abound here, too. Pitbulls and Rottweilers are not used, as those 2 breeds are entirely unpredictable - a feature good for fighting other dogs (or people) to the death, but not one to make a dependable guard.
