Excessive water drinking can be a sign of Diabetes in cats and dogs. Discuss it with your vet. If they are drinking alot of water and the urine is thick and has a strong odor, it is very likely that they are suffering from the effects of diabetes. This can be diagnosed quite easily and can be corrected with two shots a day. And it's very inexpensive to treat.

When a cat is drinking too much water, it can be a sign of terminal illness. It can be a very bad sign. Basically, any changes in your cat's water (or food) consumption have to be taken seriously.

You have to take the cat to the vet. No one on the internet is really going to be able to help you, since we can't see and touch the cat. An actual veterinarian needs to examine the cat, and run blood and urine tests and stuff.

If you need help finding a vet, see the Related Links below. Note that the last two links are for emergencies only.

First, you should know that I am not a veterinarian. My wife and I do, however, provide a home for upwards of 20 or more cats.

In our experience, if a cat starts to drink a lot more water than is usual, it sometimes indicates a problem with the animal's kidneys. Your veterinarian can run a test to determine whether or not this is the case. The test isn't cheap, but it's not too expensive either. If it is the kidneys, your cat may need a special diet in order to keep him/her healthy. Kidney problems are serious, and they usually do not go away on their own.

Bottom line: you should get your cat a checkup as soon as possible if he/she hasn't had one recently. At the very least you should call a veterinarian to inquire about why your cat is consuming an excess amount of water. He or she may then suggest that you make an appointment. Or, the veterinarian may have other questions for you and may want to see the animal right away.

Hope this helps. And I hope your cat is or will be well.

Your cat drinks water. Maybe not when you're around, but they do. I know most cats drink out of the toilet sometimes. If you're really worried about it, switch their water-bowl to a glass bowl because metal or plastic bowls can get a funny odor which discourages the cat to drink out of it.

If you think your cat is dehydrated, grab the scruff of their neck (the loose skin their mothers carry them by) and twist it a little then let go. If it does not untwist within a second, your cat is dehydrated. Take him/her to the vet immediately.

Cats drink water for the same reasons that all animals ingest water - this is a vital nutrient needed for life. The choice of the fountain as a water source is based upon personal preference - my cat drinks from a plastic glass of water downstairs, a glass bowl upstairs, a small ornamental fountain in the dining room, the toilet bowl, and (for some odd reason) water in the bath tub. All of the water is clean, so there's no risk of illness - it's just my cat's little quirk. Your cat drinking from a fountain is probably the same thing - just a quirk that makes him/her adorable.

What do cats drink and eat?

Cats are carnivores, so it is ideal to find a brand of cat food that has a lot of meat in. Cats, even domestic ones, do not need vegetables or grains. Cats drink water; DO NOT GIVE THEM MILK! Milk makes a least a 5-month-old cat sick. Only kittens should drink their mother's milk. Never give a kitten or cat cow's milk.

Do cats drink water?

i have a cat i give it milk and water she drinks about 3-4 litres a day of water and about 1 litre of milk but my next doors cat doesnt drink that much id say about 2-3 litres That will depend on the individual cat, the type of food it eats and your home environment (i.e. if it is very warm in your home). If a cat is on wet food (meat or pate) then they will tend to drink very little as the water content in their food is very high. If they are on dry cat food then some cats may drink more as they need to substitute the water they are missing out on from the dry food. However, many cats will not drink enough water while on dry food. Some cats may drink as little as 50% of their water intake. Two ways that help cats drink more is to leave a tap on, or purchase a pet water fountain. Many cats are fickle when it comes to water and will only drink fresh moving water. A running tap or fountain keeps water constantly moving and fresh, and both methods are very successful in enticing a cat to drink more water. Always make fresh water available no matter what food they are on.
